Finish Lines

Graphic Novel with writer Sarah Broyles, Spring 2026, First Second Books

Miranda is a driven junior with Ivy League dreams—until her parents pull the plug on every club, competition, and committee she’s in.

With college applications looming and pressure to stand out mounting, Miranda starts to panic. Then she finds the perfect solution: the Texas Water Safari—a 260-mile canoe race her mom and granddad are gearing up to tackle. After her mom gets injured, Miranda steps in, determined to make it her moment to shine.

Sarah Broyles started reading graphic novels years ago with her kids and became hooked on stories told through sequential art. She has a dusty English degree from theUniversity of Texas at Austin, where she continues to live with her husband and their two daughters—who have, bittersweetly, long since outgrown story time with Mom. Finish Lines is her first book.

Hanna Schroy is a cartoonist and illustrator living in Austin, Texas. She studied sequential arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she fell even deeper in love with visual storytelling. She is the author of Last Dance. When she’s not drawing comics, she’s either dancing, gardening, or trying to finish just one more level of her favorite video games.

Distraught, Miriam is forced to give up her position in the ballet company and abandon her dreams. On her way out the door, Miriam discovers a secret room with a pair of magical dance shoes. A spirit approaches her and offers her the ability to dance once again with the caveat that the spirit gets to dance once again, through Miriam.
